Neutral earthing reactors are used to create a neutral point in a three phase system, enabling an effective neutral earthing reference where there isn't one available or when the existing one is not reliable (usually in delta systems). They may be provided with and additional low voltage winding to feed auxiliary services in the substation.

Current - limiting reactors are series reactors used to reduce the short circuit currents in the power system to predefined values of current and failure duration.
