Step Down transformers are necessary to take the voltage from transmission levels to proper levels for power sub transmission. The electricity supply network has various tension levels until voltage is finally taken down to domestic consumption level. It is also a common practice to have high energy consumption industries connected directly to the transmission network; in these cases a step down transformer is required.
